Employment permits are available for various occupations that are in short supply. There are two lists that define what is eligible and what is not eligible for an employment permit. The first list governs occupations that are eligible for the critical skills permit (Critical Skills Occupations list), the second list governs those occupations that will not get a permit (there are a few exceptions to this such as for partners/spouses of critical skills permit holders).
The lists are usually reviewed twice a year. On Friday last, Minister Humphries announced the mid year review of the occupation lists for 2019. This consultation will be open until 12 July 2019.
As an employer, it is important that you feel that your sector should be able to avail of permits, you need to make a submission to the Department during this consultation period. Further information on the submission process is available on the Department’s website on https://dbei.gov.ie/en/Consultations/Call-for-Submissions-Review-of-the-Occupations-Lists-for-Employment-Permits.html
